South Chuvash people so as North ones have a lot of national rites and superstitions, connected with the Russian Holiday of New Year. That's why in some places South Chuvashs believe, that all animals speak to each other at night of New Year. If somebody hears their talk this person has to keep silent. If he tells anybody about it he/ she will become dumb.

I have heard a legend about it:

"In New Year's Eve one man overheard a talk of sheep near the sheep-fold. One sheep said to the other one:
- You know, we will have a good life. Our host has grinded the rye so poorly, so a lot of speeds are left their. In winter he will feed us with this straw.
Next morning the host grinded the rye once again. As a matter of fact he got a lot of speeds then. However sheep when saw him grinded the rye, died of grief. (Tayapa ) .
In New Year's Eve people go outside on the open air and look at stars: if there a lot of stars much peas will be in the coming year; if there are few of them, little peas
will be. (Ulhash ).

In the morning of a New Year it is very important to notice what kind of person visits your house. Good person brings good with himself. The increase of geese and hens will be great. But if a bad person comes first the increase of geese and hens will be little. (Ulhash ).
In Tayapa people bake likeness of a bird in the first day of a New Year. It is called "tary" (a skylark ). but today nobody knows what it means. At the same time small balls are baked with the use of new flour and rhe boken speeds of hemp. These balls are called "nuts" (mayara) or "New Year's nuts" (sene sul mayari ).

North Chuvashs from Vompukassi have a lot of national fortune-telling rites, held during the New Year's night. Girls and boys want to know about their future husbands and wives. They have a night divination with the lead. Boys want to know if they are taken to the army in the coming year. Girls are eager to know if they get married in the coming year. If he sees something like a weapon in melted lead, he will serve in the army. A bride wreath means marriage. If he sees a coffin he will die this year. also they may ask something else, but such divination is considered to be a sin. If a girl wants to know about her future husband she has to take the cross off the neck and bring keys to the house, saying the following words:

She stays at home alone of course. She puts the cross under her feet. In some period of time the door opens and her future husband enters. But as soon as she sees him she must take the cross on. Because if she is late he will kill her. If a girl wants to know whether her husband will be rich or poor at New Year's night she takes the cross off her neck and goes to the granary to Shoytan. As there is a hole in the center of the granary to make up the fire it is considered that Shoytan lives there. So the girl comes up to the hole, picks up the hem of the skirt and take a sit over the hole. If Shoytan touches her by the hand in a glove her future husband will be rich. But if he strokes her by the naked hand her future will be poor. At New Year's night girls go outside and throw out their shoes to the street through the fence. Their future husbands will be from those sides to which their shoes show.

In Chandrovo of Kozmodemyanski district boys and girls get known about their sweet halves in the following way. A girl or a boy goes to the hen-house and following way. A girl or a boy goes to the hen-house and catches the first cock or hen and take it to the house. In the house they put a glass of water, bread, coal, ashes on the floor. Then they watch what the hen pecks. If it pecks water the future mate will be a drunkard. it if pecks bread the future mate will be wealthy. If it pecks coal, the future mate will be poor. If it pecks ashes the future mate will die early.
