Devil's week

V.K. Magnitskiy mentions this Week too, but he uses the materials of Kamenskiy.

The period between Christmas and Epiphany is called Devil's Week in some places of Cheboksarskiy district. The following national custom is connected with this Week: children dress up the scarecrow, stick the hempen beard to it, place it in a house. They jump, dance around it and smear themselves with the soot. The day before Epiphany they bring the scarecrow to the river, where they break it and throw out the river. In the day of Epiphany all children participate in the following procedure - they wash up by the Epiphaneis water. Undoubtedly the influence of Christianity is reflected here. This rite was able to spread out only a small territory, because in some places even christened Chuvash people don't have any idea about it.
