Pihampar

The master of wolves. Wolves are dogs of Pihampar which obey only him. That is why when a Chuvash or a herdsman saw a wolf on the way to the herd or near it he prayed to Pihampar for salvation. In that case they said the following words:

Pihampar, withhold your dog!
(Ulhash)

Northern Chuvash call him Pyuhampar and suppose that he lives in heavens like Pyulechshche. When sacrificing beer people offer up a sacrificial prayer as well:

…ah, Pyuhampar, have mercy upon us,
withhold your dog,
save the cattle…
(Vompukassi)

(Compare Persian pejgamber ‘prophet, Mohammed’. In Mari piambar “prophet, saint (?)” – M. Silashi. Cheremisski slovar).
