Literally means “a red bank”. He is viewed as a kind spirit that lives in heaven, but his image remains uncertain due to the absence of legends and myths connected with him. Most likely, he is also the relic of the old pagan world. During sacrifices his name is mentioned just once, in the sacrifice with beer:
…Red bank, bless (us)
Red bank’s mother, bless (us).
I didn’t hear the name herle schir among southern Chuvash, it is widespread only in the North, where people think that he has a mother: herle schir amash “red bank’s mother” (Vompukassy).
